Baseball & BBQ – What do they have in common? A name. Skeeters
There is absolutely no mistaking that I love baseball. I’ve been a HUGE fan since I was little. My sisters and I played t-ball and softball growing up, and my parents even coached. (One year, my sister and I were on a team that my mom coached, and we were the The New Girls on the Block! Yeah, you guessed it – that era!) Now, Braxton plays, and next season, Hawk will, too!
When we moved to Sugar Land, we were super excited to find out that there was going to be a new Minor League team forming here! We’re huge Houston Astros fans, and since the Texas Rangers too over the Round Rock Express, the Astros had to inevitably have something other than OKC’s AAA.
The naming process began. It was put up to a public vote, and for some reason, the idiots and rednecks decided to come out of hiding for a while and vote it up, because the new team has been dubbed with the stereotypical-of-this-area name “Skeeters”.
REALLY HOUSTON? Really? There were perfectly good names in the mix such as Imperials (which would have made sense.. um.. SUGAR Land, Imperial Sugar… Hello!?) But no, the three “finalists” were Skeeters, King Canes, and Lizard Kings. Talk about three strikes and we were already out before they’ve even gotten started!
SKEETERS? I know that it’s a play on how most of us around here say “mosquitoes”, but the only thing I can think of is that awesome place to eat BBQ – Skeeter’s Grill!
The good news for MY family is that they are going to be building the stadium about 10 minutes or so from our house – or so Andy says, anyway! Sure, it’s probably going to cause more traffic problem for commuters, but I think the good outweighs the bad, even if the team’s name is the Skeeters. There’s going to be an AWESOME new place, right down the road, that will bring affordable family fun and America’s favorite pastime – or at least OUR fave!
I’m sure, one day, I’ll get over the name of the team. I guess to each his own, right? I mean, we named our 3rd child Hawk, and not everyone approved of that, but they love him anyway!
In other good news….. Andy told me that one of the people in the running for manager of the team is one of my all time faves from when I used to LIVE at the Astrodome (remember that place?) – Casey Candaele!
I can’t wait to see the new stadium! …and the logo IS actually kind of cute…
LOL, people HATE skeeters though. I don’t get why someone would choose that as a team name.
Maybe they think it’s a terrifying name! haha
I’m glad you guys will be so close! Sounds like a unit study on baseball coming up at KBH!
Haha.. baseball study is daily around here! If they know anything, it’s baseball!
So cool! Wish we lived closer – between our <3 of baseball, CDs and various other things it would be fun to have a buddy close by to hit up some games!
I know! that would be AWESOME! 🙂 So much fun!
