I don’t like to work out or run.  I’m not really lazy, it’s just something I prefer to put on the back burner.  I’d rather sit on the couch and watch TV than go for a jog or get up and do a 30 minute workout.  I’m pretty sure I’m in the majority when it comes to people in America who are sedentary couch potatoes. but after receiving my FitBit One, I realized just HOW inactive I really am.  When you can visibly see, on a chart, just how much you don’t move around, it tends to change you.

FitBit One Review – Wireless Activity and Sleep Tracker

FitBit One ReviewI’ve had several different pedometers, and I can say that none of them have been as cool or as eye opening as the FitBit One.

But that isn’t really why I wanted this particular model!  The feature I liked most about the One is so cool, that I’ve talked several friends into buying one, just for the awesome sleep tracker feature!  The obvious part of a pedometer type device is tracking your steps and calories burned, however, the FitBit takes it much further than that.  You can track pretty much every part of your day on the FitBit Dashboard – for FREE.

The first thing I wanted to do, when I got my FitBit One, definitely wasn’t to see how much I sit still.  The reason I chose the one I did was to track my sleep.  I have a feeling that the reason I feel so lethargic, lately, is for the lack of sleep.  We co-sleep with our 16 months old, and even though he’s getting better and sleeping more through the night, I’m finding that my mind doesn’t shut down when my body does.  I lie awake, much of the night thinking about what I need to be doing.  After tracking my sleep, I think I know why I feel so lazy during the day.  Check out this chart!

I have a feeling that this first night, I was awakened quit a bit, because I was fully aware it was on my wrist, and was probably messing with it quite a bit. After I posted this chart on Facebook, one of my friends with a FitBit One gave me a few tips on how to better track the Sleep Efficiency.  In the FitBit Dashboard, I changed my Sleep Settings to “Sensitive” and it gave me a better idea of how efficient I was sleeping.

After I got a little more used to sleeping with the FitBit One on my wrist, I noticed that the efficiency seemed a little more accurate.  But, it’s still not what I wanted to see.

Accountability

fitbit friend trackerAnother great feature of the FitBit is the accountabiliy that you find when you add your friends to your dashboard.  They can track your progress and see how well you’re doing or you’re not doing.  Just this morning, I saw one of my Facebook friends encouraging another one, and that’s really important when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.

As you can tell, I haven’t done all that great this week, and there is no excuse for that, but I am ranking third among my friends.

Calories In vs. Calories Out

I’ve always been told that no matter how much you walk, run, or workout, you can’t outrun bad eating habits.  I can walk 10 miles in one day, but that’s not going to put me any closer to a healthy lifestyle if I’m not watching what I eat.  The best way to keep track of the calories going in, is to sit down, once a day, and log them into my FitBit dashboard. You’re able to put in the food that you’ve consumed, by food, amount, and time of day.  All of it is saved in your FitBit Dashboard, and you’re able to go and look at how many calories your consuming compared to burning.

This wasn’t a great day for me, because I was sick, but as a nursing mother, I’m supposed to take in about 2000 calories a day (and everyone is supposed to do at least 10,000 steps a day, and clearly I did not!).

FitBit One Tracks the following:

  • Calories Burned

After receiving the FitBit One, I’ve made some changed in my lifestyle.  I’ve busted out my treadmill and started the Couch to 5k training.  It’s going well, and I feel really good when I’m up and moving around.  It’s crazy that all it took was a few glances in a mirror and a nifty little gadget the size of my little finger.  It helps keep me active, accountable, and on my way to a healthier lifestyle.
