Does it really save money to rent LEGO Sets? | #lego #legos
So I just got an email with an offer for this site that is basically a Netflix-like LEGO service.
You choose a plan, pay their price, choose your sets, and they ship you the LEGOs. You play with them as long as you want, put them back in a ziplock bag that they send you, throw it into the pre-labeled return shipping box, and start all over.
Good idea, right? Wait, what? Sure, your house is decluttered, but are you really saving money?
- FAN – Get small/medium sets – $15/month, free shipping
- SUPERFAN – Get small/medium/large sets – $25/month, free shipping
- MEGAFAN – Get small-large/ huge sets – $39/month, free shipping
Honestly, for the small/medium set monthly fee, you can just go out and buy your own set each month. You can usually find sets in those size anywhere from $10-25 at any store.
LEGO Ninjago Cole Earth Driller – $15 at Amazon
LEGO Super Heroes Arctic Batman vs Mr Freeze – $19 at Amazon
LEGO Star Wars A-wing Starfighter – $24 at Amazon
LEGO Star Wars AT-RT = $16 at Amazon
(I can do this all day!)
These are under the SuperFan list.
LEGO Creator Construction Hauler This one is under the “SuperFan” list, and you can get it, on any day, for $18.
Ok, so let’s just see that the “huge sets” are that are for MegaFans!
LEGO Star Wars Death Star – This is the only one that I would think would really be worth “renting” for that much! Most kiddos, if they get this $400 LEGO set, they’ll either put it together and leave it alone, put it together and bust it up for regular play parts, or (if like my boys) get tired of putting it together after about hour 3 and decide to just throw all of the pieces in one big pot with the rest of their LEGOs. But then again, save your money for 10 months, and then just go buy it!
LEGO Star Wars AT-TE – Right now, $70 on Amazon (regular $90)
LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship – Right now, $104 on Amazon (regular $120)
LEGO The Lord of the Rings The Battle of Helm’s Deep Right now, $107 on Amazon (regular $130)
I can’t imagine the conversation parents are having with their kiddos. “Ok honey, you’ll be getting LEGO sets in the mail each month, but you have to send them back when you’re finished playing with them.” That’s not gonna fly in my house!
Can I buy the set if my kid wants to keep it?
Yes. If your child loves the set and wants to keep it, you can easily purchase it from your My Account page. You will be charged the retail price of the set and will get the next set in your queue.
My suggestion…. save your money and let you kids actually KEEP all their LEGOs. My boys LOVE going to Nana’s house where they can play with their uncle’s LEGOs that he kept from when he was a kid. They were worth buying and saving then, and they’re worth buying and saving now!! Even if they don’t like the set, they’ll use the pieces and mini-figures for other fun stuff!
One thing I did see (on a deal site, not the actual Pleygo site) is this cool diddy, so if you DO spend your money renting LEGOs, their heart is in the right place.
Our mission is also to raise awareness for the use of LEGO in Play Therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Studies show “LEGO Therapy” can help children with ASD with self-initiated social contact. We regularly receive great feedback from parents who have children with ASD, and this only drives us to expand our role and continue to work with the community.
I would be so worried we lost pieces if we rented them out. And usually I end up putting them together and Landon destroys it. ugh.
I wonder how many they would let you lose until they realize you’re just building your own sets!
That is just nuts!!!!! What happens if you lose or break a piece? How do you keep the rented pieces from being mixed up with your regular pieces?
I don’t think even a die hard Lego fan would shell out that kind of cash.
I have a better idea – swap sets with your family, friends and neighbors! Once you finish building that pirate ship see if your neighbor’s son wouldn’t mind swapping his NASCAR car for the pirate ship. I’m sure you know what I mean.
See, even swapping would be a crazy concept for me. I would hate to have to dig through the thousands of bricks to find the ones my kids lost that belonged to the neighbors.
There is no way we would do this!!! all the lost ones that end up everywhere! every few days we collect a bunch and put them back in the bin, there would be no way those sets get sent back altogether
It would be so hard to sort and separate!!!
My kids lose lego, so I would never want to rent a set.
Right! It would be like renting socks! Bwahaha!!
I agree. I did a sponsored post for the company and we were required to write a positive review – um yeah I don’t normally do that but I succumbed to the 3 months free of the service. Our family has gotten two whole sets sent to our house and the second one we’ve had for almost a month now simply because they won’t fit in our mail slot to send them back so we have to go to the post office- so out of my way. As soon as our 3 months are up we will not be paying for the service.
As for the questions above- if you loose a piece it’s okay you just have to tell them and wait for them to send it to you before you can send the set back because they want to keep everything together. I only let my kids play with them at our kitchen table and am very paranoid about them taking it anywhere else because I’m afraid it will get mixed in. I definitely don’t think the service is worth it. They gave me the lowest plan for free too and it doesn’t include very many sets my girls like the couple Lego Friends sets they have but they don’t have any Duplos for my little one under that plan. They are a startup company and have said they’ll get more but my kids are just not cool about the idea of having to send them back and the price they want you to pay to buy them from them- not a good price (you can find them way less in stores).
Save your money and buy Legos or like this post says swap with friends.
I can see it now…. My boys would start misplacing all the mini-figures.. “accidentally”.
I’m with you. I definitely don’t see where its worth it and OMG I can’t imagine your amount of paranoia!!! I would probably be too scared to even open the packages!
Ha, the first time I saw a post about this I was wondering what fantasy world they lived in that it would be smart fiscal thing to pay for. We just picked up a LEGO Marvel one with 295 pieces for $35. That’s less than the 2 months for the plan. If your kid doesn’t want it after putting it together (and that seems strange if LEGO’s are played with in your home) then take it to a kids resale shop and you could probably get at least 1/2 of the $$ back again anyway. Still cheaper than Pleygo.
