Lego colours: This season’s fashion building blocks | #fashion
It’s not often you can take fashion inspiration from what’s in your little one’s toy box. But, after a long grey winter, many of the big-name designers have showcased collections in hues akin to those you’d see in a Lego set. Punch-bright primary and secondary shades made their way down the runways of everyone from Fendi to Prada, Céline to Issey Miyake. Here are just a few of this season’s key pieces from the high end to the high street:
Gorgeous green
Whether you invest in anything else, a statement necklace can update your look in one, dramatic instant. Nepalese American designer Prabal Gurung sent his models down his spring/summer catwalks looking like green goddesses in floor length gowns while Aquazzura has released emerald green heels. But an alternative way to add a touch of green is with the mint necklace from Treasure Box. You could wear over a white dress for summer vacations or over a shirt and chunky jumper until the weather warms up.
Oh so stylish orange
By little known label Narciss, Abigale jumpsuit is listed as being in the yellow colour pathway, but it has a definite orange tone to it. With striped detailing it channels a sportsluxe vibe but could be dressed up or down for day or night. You could wear with a pair of navy heels and a box clutch for a dinner date or pair with sandals for daytime.
Beautiful blue
Pretty, flippy and flirty, the round-necked Milano knit dress from La Redoute Creation is the perfect transitional piece. The shape looks like a Victoria Beckham piece, but it’s a fraction of the price. And, while the dropped waist style is very on trend, the flounced hem keeps it ultra-flattering. A blue flowy button up shirt is also very versatile and could be worn with a statement necklace, high heels and a clutch for evening or with a blazer for work.
Ravishing red
It may be pricier than some second-hand cars, but it’s hard not to fall in love with the leather box bag by Mark Cross. It almost looks like a piece of Lego itself with its boxy shape and it would look simply stunning worn as a pop of colour against a contrasting shade. It’s a great fashion forward alternative to a traditional clutch bag and it ticks two of this season’s trend boxes in one with its bright shade and tiny size.
Yummy yellow
Yellow is always a popular shade for summer because it looks beautiful with a sunkissed glow. Whether it was sherbet, buttercup or lemon sorbet, there was lots of yellow on the spring/summer 2014 runways. Turkish-born designer Bora Aksu showed a collection full of pretty frills and sheer fabrics at London Fashion Week, while Emilia Wickstead showcased ladylike skirts and cropped jackets. Turning to vintage stores and sites is a great way to get a similar 50s-style look. The Susan Glen blouse from Rusty Zipper is a find that encompasses three of the season’s trends in one purchase – pleats, yellow and sheer. You could wear with shorts and sandals for a casual festival-style look or tuck into slouchy white trousers for a more formal summer wedding vibe, but if you want the real deal you can always look for formal wedding dresses. If you will be a bridesmaid at a wedding, there are plenty of ways to choose between bridesmaid dresses within the brides specifications.
This season, whichever hue you choose, any colour goes, so long as it’s bright.
