Mother of the Year Award… Again. | #parenting
SO another mom of the year award goes to none other than… me.
Back in December, The Teenager decided while playing Ultimate Frisbee with the youth group, that she’d be awesome and jump hurdles on the track. I have absolutely no idea why she thought this was a good idea. She’s a klutz. If there’s a crack in the sidewalk she’s going to trip on it. If there’s a brick wall in the area, she’s going to run into it. If there’s a bike around, she’s going to fall off of it.
I wasn’t there, but according to witnesses, she jumped, tripped, and busted it pretty badly. Later that evening, she said that her wrist hurt, and if I remember correctly, she put some ice on it, took some ibuprofen, and went on about her merry way. Days later, she got a little brace to put on it, and eventually she stopped wearing it.
This mom right here…. thought she was better.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. The Teen had a friend over. They were swimming in a very nice pool, it was recently renovated with a bit of an extension with more steps and a shotcrete pool replacement, this is when her friend’s little brother pushed The Teen in the pool. From what she said, she went in and caught herself on the steps of the pool. She told me about it, but she didn’t act like it was that big of a deal.
Not long after, the Mimi took her to get a brace, and I wrote it off as no big deal because she never really complained about it!
This past week, she went to my sister’s for the week and painted helped her paint the walls of the new business she opened up, – you can check out Kara’s K9 Retreat in San Antonio – and her wrist began to swell and hurt again.
Yesterday, my mom took her in to the chiropractor, and low and behold, we went back this morning and found out that she has a fractured wrist!
Fractured wrist. Talk about feeling like a terrible mother. We’re not exactly sure if she fractured it in December and it never healed because we never took her in, or if she weakened it in December and actually fractured it during the pool incident.
They put Rocktape on it, told her to wear her brace, and she has to rest it. She’s SO not happy that she’s not able to climb the rock wall on her mission trip this next week. Actually, it’s a very physical mission trip, and she’s not every happy that she can’t do any lifting. Thankfully, God gave her the gift if ministry, so at least she can minister to the people in the area.
I’ve learned a valuable lesson. Very valuable lesson. If your kiddo does something that doesn’t start to feel better, and actually continues to hurt for… I don’t know… SEVEN months, chances are you need to have it tended to!
After she gets back from the mission trip, we’re going to take her back in. If it’s not starting to heal in the next couple of weeks, then they’ll refer her out to an ortho. I really hope it starts to heal, because she will go CRAZY in a cast!!
(The good news is, though, she’s cleared to continue jujitsu training as long as she stays off of her wrist! Go get her, Sensei Joe!
Many years ago when my oldest was really young he told me his foot hurt. It seemed fine. Nothing looked broken or anything so I kept telling him to rest and ice. He said he hadn’t fallen, tripped or anything like that. After a day we took him to the pediatrician and discovered that he had a fractured growth plate. Boy did I feel like a jerk.
I hope it starts to heal now that she has it taped up. I’m sorry she’ll miss some things on her mission trip, but her arm is more important.
Awwwwww poor girl!!
Oh, don’t beat yourself up, momma! It didn’t present as a fractured wrist to begin with. Maybe she’s got a higher pain tolerance, too. Hugs to you both! <3
I can’t help but giggle through reading this. I do the same dang thing to my kids and myself as well. Constantly brushing things off as over dramatic kids trying to get a sympathy card handed their way. Hope her wrist heels up quickly!
Oh no! Hugs. Poor girl. She is tough.
Aww man that sucks! Don’t beat yourself up, if even she didn’t know it was broken there’s no way you could have known. Hope she’s feeling better soon!
Oh no! That does not sound fun. At least now that you know what is going on it can properly heal.
This is terrible. I hope it heals well.
