Try telling a 15 year old, out of the blue, that you signed her up for jujitsu.  Honestly, we didn’t give her a choice.  It was one of those decisions where we know her better than she knows herself, and we knew that she’d love it.  The new dojo is named Washi Bujutsu which means “Eagle Martial Arts” which is quite fitting for our very spirited Barbers Hill Eagle community.  The motto is pretty clever, too – “Where Eagles Throw”.

It took some serious convincing for her to go back after her first day of training, but like a champ, she put a smile on her face and bowed on to the mat.  Don’t get me wrong, she shot a few evil glares over to the mom cheering section, but I could tell that when she didn’t think I was looking – she loved it.

After her third or fourth night of training, on our way home, she looked at me with one of those “I hate to admit it” grins on her face and said, “Mom, I really don’t want you to be right, but….  I really like it.”

A few days later, we found out she had a chronic broken wrist.  Story of our lives.  She was put into a removable, waterproof cast (hard as a rock!), and in a few weeks, we find out if she will need surgery.

But that’s not stopping her.

As soon as she was officially fitted for her Washi Bujutsu gi, that was it.  A light switched on that lit a fire inside her that I haven’t quite seen before.  My girl… is pumped for jujitsu!

Currently, there’s only one other female who trains at Washi Bujutsu.  She’s older than Kylie,  goes to our church, and we love her, but Kylie is determined not to let her “win”.

Here’s a short video of her determination.

It’s kinda neat for her to be the only female at her high school involved in Martial Arts (that we know of), but we look forward to more people learning about the dojo and coming to train.

I’m pretty excited to see where this new love leads her, and it’s so awesome to hear her Sensei say that he sees greatness in her. If nothing else, we’ll all be able to rest a little easier knowing that she’s learning valuable life-saving self-defense skills that will go with her to college and beyond. That type of knowledge and ability is priceless. And who knows, maybe down the road, she might even earn a certification from Americansportandfitness.com to further enhance her expertise in self-defense.
