30 Days of Mom-to-Be: Day 6 – Rebozo (Mexican Shawl) for Labor
As you’ve probably noticed by now, I tend to march to the beat of my own drum compared to the rest of my family.
I am a labor doula, and it’s just in my nature to be a natural birth advocate.
One of the greatest tools I’ve had the privilege of utilizing during birth has been the Rebozo Wrap, also known as a traditional Mexican Shawl. However, any shawl or length of fabric will work!
The Rebozo is extremely versatile during pregnancy, labor, birth, as well as postpartum!
You want your Rebozo to be long enough to wrap around your back with additional length for your doula or significant other to hold so that your weight can be supported. Essentially, your coach will be an extension of your arms. The Rebozo is great to use while lying down as in the photo or standing up where you would simply lean back to relieve some of the pressure of your lower back and hips.
If you are squatting during labor, the Rebozo can be used to help support your weight as well as maintain balance.
My favorite was when I used my Rebozo to help a client push by playing “tug of war“. We tied a knot on each end of the Rebozo and I pulled one way, and she pulled the other. This helped her positioning and focus while pushing. While she was actually pulling with her arms, other muscles in her body were doing the exact opposite.
Other great uses during pregnancy, labor, and after birth:
- Use the rebozo during pregnancy exercises to help you with balance by tying one end to a bar or bed post.
- Need a quick but light cover up during labor when the chills may set in? Grab your Rebozo!
- Use your Rebozo to swaddle your baby after you’ve had your skin to skin contact. Your scent will be on the scarf from your wear, and your baby will be warm and feel as if he is with you.
- After the baby is here, use the Rebozo as a wrap or baby carrier.
If you order a Rebozo (really, any shawl) via Amazon Mom, you’ll enjoy two day FREE SHIPPING!
Definitely put a Rebozo shawl on your list of MUST HAVES very soon! The big day will be here before you know it!
