Bloggers do not work for FREE. Please don’t expect us to.
My blog started out as something fun. I used to be on a different URL, and once I decided I was serious about blogging, I cracked down, bought this URL and decided to build up it. I’ve also started blogging full time for another blog (which I will not name to save the innocent).
That said… blogging is a job. Sure, a lot of it is fun, but I sit here for 8 hours or more a day, and blog, juggling kiddos, diapers, lunches, school drop off and pick up, and all the other stuff that comes with being a wife and a mom.
When I post a great deal, 99.44% of the time, it is linked with an affiliate link, and I get a commission if you buy something after clicking on my link. It’s good honest work, and it helps pay our bills and feed our family.
All but one company, that I no longer promote and will not name — make your own assumptions — tells me and millions of other bloggers up front what our percentage will be before we make a post. If I do a sponsored post, the rep tells me how much (s)he’s going to pay me before I make the post. This is my way to ensure that it’s worth my time.
Have you signed up for THIS awesome site?
Until recently, most bloggers, if they did it correctly, made quit a bit of money with the “but one” company. We started to see our commission drop slightly, and then after a huge promotion, said company decided to wait until millions of bloggers drove sales and traffic to their site by the droves (1 million sold) to let us know that they would not be paying us for our time and sales.
Can. you. say. livid?
After that day, commission has dropped and bloggers all over have noticed a HUGE decrease in commission and a rise in complaints. We’ve also noticed TV ads. Now that we… those they would like to work for free… drove comsumers to the site, they have dropped us like hot cakes, lied to us, manipulated us, and flat out ignored our concerns.
Not only that, but when someone asks a question about commission on their Facebook Page, they posts and comments are being deleted as fast as they can go up.
Many bloggers, and yes, we’re ALL friends, and we do talk, have had to hound and hound this company for paychecks (we’re talking hundreds… sometimes thousands…. of dollars) yet we see TV commercials air several times a day. If they’re dragging their feet to pay us until we hound them, what about all that money owed to people who do not realize they’ve made enough to get a check?
Keep in mind that this company pays a percentage of NET that they will not disclose. So, if they sell a product for $20 and only make (or so they say) $1 off of the product, guess what, we only get paid $0.30. So really, if they promote a $200 product that we think we’re going to make good money off of (because that’s a lot of money, right?), they don’t tell us, up front, how much their profit is so that we’ll promote it anyway.
Today, there was another HUGE promotion that I did not promote on this blog. Affiliates were told they would be getting paid for
- 1. Sign ups for their site
- 2. Commission on the sale.
Not a single blogger that I’ve come in contact with has had a sign up commission… (which is more than 8 times the pay of the actual product sale commission)
Is that even legal?
So… if you go to work tomorrow and your boss says.. “Hey, next week, you’re going to work on commission, but we’re not going to tell you what that percentage will be NOR will we tell you if what you’re doing is even commissionable, but go ahead and be here at 8:00 am sharp so that you can start working hard to make our company successful.” Are you going to ask questions? If the boss won’t give you any answers, are you going to ask someone else? If that someone else shushes you, are you going to find a better opportunity? I think so.
BLOGGERS DO NOT WORK FOR FREE.
Now, it’s out there, and that “but one” reps can’t delete it!
I think I might know which company you are talking about…and I agree 100%. It’s very shady!
Sadly, I used to go to bat for the company when someone would talk bad about them! Not anymore.
SHAME ON THEM!!! They better pay up or prepare for a biiiiig lawsuit.
I decided they were shady a couple of months ago when I had to fight to get paid, and when they finally sent my cheque, they conveniently “forgot” to pay me for my two biggest months. They are not worth my time and I don’t plan to post their deals anymore.
And here I thought you blogged for the freebies & promotional items they sent you to promoand write about! I knew it was sales driven, but I didn’t know it was commission based. Beats direct sales & catalogsI guess.
I have never been paid by said company. Many many many emails, no check. I am about to give up and go with the company that has consistently paid me and given me what I need in a productive, mutually beneficial relationship.
I HATE that companies feel we (bloggers) should work for free. Meanwhile that PR rep is making $$ for every minute they sit there in that desk chair sending out email after email to us bloggers convincing us to work for free, because they are working for $$.. double edged sword much?!
I am currently waiting for payment from a company from June – they are messing me around so much.
They say they have sent it twice blah blah blah but they haven’t and it’s just getting ridiculous!
The amount they owe me is quite substantial for me – but practically pennies for such such a massive company! They wouldn’t work without getting paid, so why do they expect us too?
I was told the same thing!!! I had to fight to get my check. It should not be that way!
Luckily I don’t use this company but we are talking about it in another group right now and they’re all ditching. If they think bloggers don’t talk, they are insane.
Ridiculous!!
You said it sista!! I fortunately did not post this deal because part of why I blog is to help people stay healthy. So thankful I didn’t waste my precious time! Still waiting on a check that was promised 12 days ago {after quite the battle}. I’m hoping I actually get it. I also saw HUGE drops over the last month or so when I know full well people were signing up and buying. Time to move on!
I’m a newer blogger – and this happened one month into my blogging career. I was floored! And also it made me wonder if this sort of thing was the norm.
It is definitely NOT the norm!!
You should name the company. I like to know who to boycott (because I do)
Right! I didn’t name them, because the last thing I want is to be sued.
Definitely understandable that you don’t want to say “who” so you won’t get sued. But it would good for those of us who don’t know to make sure we don’t support them either.
I can’t believe they really have a case to sue if what you post is just the facts and can be verified. If you just state the facts without personal information to purposely do the company harm, it’s just the truth. Right?
What am I missing? 🙂
An anonymous comment would do the trick I’d assume.
I’ve. Been blogging for about 5 mo now and last week I received an email from a rep asking to share some info with my readers. As a new newbie I was very xcited that they noticed my blog and said sure I’d be happy to. There was no mention of payment or anything. I guess I was excited for the recognition and thought this was how you get started. Lately I’ve been reading a lot about these situations and realize that I should not be doing this for free. I have not posted their info on my blog as of yet since I’ve been reading all this stuff. Before becoming a SAHM I used to work in online advertising working with publishers (bloggers) and we would never have suggested anyone advertise for free. We always told them how much each campaign would cost and how much they would make.
So much to learn on the flip side. (Sorry its so long). Is there a way to post the said company anonymously?
