Not too long ago, my friend Maria and I started talking about bug-out bags and how everyone should have one in case of an emergency.

At first, I thought she just meant that she has a bag with important papers in case something happens, they can just grab and go.  But, the more research I do on them, the more I realize that every household should have some type of bug-out bag or emergency survival kit ready to grab and go at a moment’s notice. A well-stocked emergency kit with survival products tailored to your specific location and potential hazards can significantly enhance your ability to cope with unexpected situations and minimize disruptions to daily life.

Living in the Houston area, there is always the possibility of a hurricane from June to November, but storms aside, you never know when any kind of natural disaster (or a zombie apocalypse) will come knocking at your door.  A few months back, our area was riddled with wildfires, and many families barely got out with the clothes on their backs.

I think the number one thing on your list for your bug-out bag or survival kit is emergency food in case of disasters, and of course, enough water for each person in your family as well (at least 1 gallon per person a day is recommended).

Make sure your emergency bag or kit is well-stocked with all the essentials, from prescription and non-prescription medications to a comprehensive first aid kit. Don’t forget to include important tools like a knife, duct tape, and batteries, along with hygiene essentials such as soap, feminine products, and towels. Pack clothing, blankets, and crucial documents like birth certificates, licenses, and a will. And for added preparedness, consider including something like MyCPR NOW, ensuring you’re ready for any unexpected situation that may arise.

Something else to consider is packing cash and change that you’re not going to dip into!  This might not help you in the event that zombies are taking over, but I have been through several hurricanes where credit card and ATM machines have been down.

It’s always best to hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst.
