I Can Sign Baby Sign Language Review & Giveaway (1/2)

Jett is 14 months old and he jabbers.  A lot.  He knows what he’s saying, but we find ourselves telling him “I wish I knew what you were saying!” or “Just use your words!!!”  Of course, he just looks at us and says what sounds like “What’s up??” and toddles on his merry little way.  BabyFirst is the fastest growing television channel for babies, toddlers, and moms, and one of the programs, offered on DVD, is I Can Sign baby sign language.

When a baby can express needs by signing, frustration is alleviated which results in fewer tantrums and less crying!

Did you, or are you, teaching your baby to sign?  I’ve always been intrigued, but I’ve never taken the initiative to teach any of my kids how to sign.  I’ve never really needed to, because as far as I can remember, my other kiddos were at least calling us mama and dada at this point.  Andy thinks it’s because he’s the fourth child, and he doesn’t really need to talk, because there’s always someone there to give him what he wants or needs.

Just to make it clear, though, I’m not worried about his speech.  It will come.  But, it would be cool for Jett to be able to communicate simple gestures and needs with us!

I like I Can Sign, because it’s repetitive.  Basically, a woman says a word while signing it, and every few seconds, a different picture of the word flashes on the screen while the woman continues to say the word.  The whole time it’s scrolling through different shots, there’s a small animated character in the bottom left corner that also signs the word.  That way, the baby sees the image of an action or an item in several different forms, and he or she correlates the sign as being one form of the word.  It’s really pretty cool.

Teaching babies as young as 12 months old how to use sign language enables them to effectively communicate their needs long before they can speak “proper” words. “I Can Sign” enables parents and babies to bond while learning sign language, and displays teachers verbally repeating a word while demonstrating the correlating sign.

What I like about this DVD is that it’s not only teaching Jett to put signs with words, but it’s also teaching him to put words with images and actions.  It’s also helpful for a fundamental comprehension of sign language for the other kids in our home, as well as my husband and myself.

The only downside that I see to the video, is that I would have loved to see a baby breastfeeding during the sign for “milk”.  There are so many families out there who breastfeed and love to teach their children sign language, that I think it should have been in the video.
